Inn From the Cold (IFTC) strives to meet the needs of people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in York Region. We work with the community and collaborate with our partners to support those with basic to complex needs. IFTC’s work is housing-focussed and trauma-informed, offering a continuum of services and programmes that allow us to partner with our clients on their journeys out of homelessness. IFTC promotes a healthy, safe workplace and has created an intentional culture of wellness for all staff, volunteers, and clients.
Please Come Inn is Inn From the Cold’s permanent housing program. Inn From the Cold partners with landlords in York Region by taking out a head lease and then subletting to our clients. In doing so, the service provider assumes a position of responsibility to both the landlord and the subtenant. Their role is to act as the go-to contact for these parties to ensure the sustainability of this arrangement.
Head leases are commonly used to house individuals who face high barriers to being housed. This provides individuals with the opportunity to demonstrate their reliability as tenants. It’s important to note that head leasing is a strategy within the successful and well-established ‘Housing First’ model to end homelessness. Please Come Inn offers intensive on-sight support for our clients, recognizing that significant barriers to housing success can be mitigated with consistent, client centred support.
Job Responsibilities:
- Be an ambassador for the Please Come Inn project and Inn From The Cold
- Be the first point of contact for landlord and tenants
- At all times, model the behaviour and problem-solving skills we wish to see in our tenants
- Organize/co-ordinate repairs to properties as required and provide support to clients to maintain the housing unit & property
- Using a client-centered approach, work with clients to resolve issues/disputes between tenants and/or tenants and landlord
- Check-in and connect with clients housed through program on a (minimum) bi-monthly basis, and document these interactions
- Facilitate house meetings at least 1x/month, and provide documentation thereof
- Work collaboratively with clients and Housing Retention Worker to promote successful, positive living experience for clients
- Complete VI SPDATs and help clients identify and achieve goals to enhance their life experience
- Provide brief, solution-focused counselling to tenants
- Work with community partner agencies and other support workers/services
- Refer and connect tenants to relevant services including CMHA, addiction services, healthcare, identification etc.
Administrative/Communication:
- Case notes and incident report documentation
- Data collection and reporting, as required (with support from supervisor)
- Document client goals
- Participate in bi-monthly one-on-one supervision meetings and an end of contract performance review with the Housing Manager
- Participate in all staff meetings
- Clean driving abstract, valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle with an insurance rider ($2M liability) to transport clients is required (costs can by covered by IFTC)
Health & Safety:
- Ensure all Health & Safety, psychological wellness, and IPAC guidelines are followed as per IFTC policies
- Adhere to all IFTC policies, including Working off-site, Confidentiality & Maintaining Professional Boundaries policies
- Report any relevant health & safety concerns to the Housing Manag
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:
- Degree/Diploma in social/human services field or other relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Communicate effectively in English, both written and verbally
- Demonstrated advanced interpersonal skills specific to the role, including de-briefing, active listening, conflict resolution, problem solving, and the ability to form supportive relationships with marginalized individuals
- Strong risk assessment skills, with an ability to support clients in distress and de-escalate challenging situations/crises
- Demonstrated ability to participate and contribute in a team environment with an inclusive collaborative approach, and engage in trauma-informed practice
- Ability to work under minimal supervision and act with a heigh degree of independent judgement, taking action on a variety of matters as required
- Ability to work in a stressful and changing work environment and juggle multiple priorities
- Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback
- Knowledge and understanding of the issues associated with homeless and/or socially isolated adults
- Knowledge of concurrent disorders and experience with the continuum of addiction and mental health services
- Knowledge of housing programs and familiarity with Residential Tenancies Act/LTB
- Demonstrated commitment to continual learning in providing services to the homeless population
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
- Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check, prior to first day of work
- Current First Aid and CPR certificate, prior to first day of work
- Food handling certificate an asset

Job Responsibilities:
- Assist people experiencing chronic and episodic homelessness to find, secure and keep appropriate, accessible, and affordable housing.
- Conduct assessment interviews, complete VI SPDATs, assess risk, and identify clients with more urgent needs for priority access to services.
- Provide a suite of programmes and services that are housing-focussed and client-informed, allowing clients to move along a continuum that leads to housing success.
- Know of all services and programmes accessible to ensure appropriate matching of clients to the services that best meet their needs (i.e.: income supports, senior’s services, immigration and settlement supports, housing and homelessness services, and employment training, etc.)
- Collaborate with community partners to ensure smooth warm transfers and referrals that serve our clients’ unique needs.
- Maintain strong relationships with service providers, collaborate to resolve service issues, and ensure a smooth process of connecting people to services.
- Work collaboratively with partner agencies to ensure optimal housing opportunities are available to clients.
- Maintain contact with people waiting for service to ensure they are supported and to address changes in applicant needs, level of risk and priority for service.
- Provide continuous support as plans are implemented.
- Assist vulnerable clients transitioning out of emergency shelter and into housing, and ensure housing retention in the short-term.
- Work to end homelessness for all clients, providing as many opportunities as it takes to secure housing.
- Work collaboratively with other IFTC staff and programmes.

- Work collaboratively with partner agencies to ensure housing stability.
- Assist vulnerable clients transitioning out of emergency shelter and into housing.

- Conduct and co-ordinate tenancy education sessions, invite guest speakers, evaluate sessions and seek feedback re: housing related needs from clients.
